Professional Advice Hellebore
Hellebore or helleborus, is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, with about 20 species native to many parts Europe, including western Great Britain, Spain, Romania and Turkey. The largest concentration of hellebores being in the Balkan regions. The name helleborus derives from the Greek words "elein" (to injure) and "bora" (food) as many species are poisonous. Despite popular names such as Christmas rose and Lenten rose, hellebores are not closely related to the rose family.
Hellebores have a flowering season from winter through to spring. The “Christmas Rose” is probably the world’s most famous hellebore. The common name is derived from the fact that it flowers somewhat reliably around the Christmas Holiday Season. Helleborus orientalis, is also known as Lenten rose. Both of these species are also commonly called hellebores. Helleborus is as popular at Christmas time in Germany as the poinsettia is in the United States. Many floral decorations commonly include Helleborus more than any other flower.
Beautiful bell or cup-shaped flowers, either single or double blooms and lacy, umbrella-like foliage. Blossoms sometimes face outward but more often nod gently downward. Use them alone in small bouquets, or mix them with other flowers. Every bloom has five petals surrounding a central ring of nectaries (small petals designed to hold nectar).
