Easter is the most important, oldest, and deeply religious festival in the Christian Church Calendar. Celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the triumph of life over death, it is celebrated sometime between March 21 and April 25, depending when the first Sunday after the first full moon following the northern spring equinox falls. However, a lot of aspects of modern day Easter celebrations, involving rabbits, chicks and eggs, are said to pre-date Christianity and have their roots in much earlier traditions. Bunny rabbit depictions, eggs and fluffy chicks have become synonymous with 'Easter'. They have nothing to do with the resurrection of Christ however, and can be traced back to 13th-century, pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses. Eostra was the goddess of fertility, and feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox. Her symbol was a rabbit because of the rabbit's high reproduction rate. Modern day Easter Egg Hunts originate from Germany, where folklore tells of an Easter hare who laid eggs for children to hunt down and find. German immigrants to the US carried the tradition with them and it spread from there. Popular easter traditions include easter egg hunts, easter bonnet competitions and decorating eggs.
